About JIRP

Jogja's bustling and friendly art scene atmosphere, supported by the easy access provided by many airlines from connecting cities, had attracted many visiting artists or art enthusiasts, not only from neighboring Asian countries but from Australia, Europe, and even from Latin America. Apart from some art events (ART JOG, Biennale Jogja) which is enlisted in international art agenda and anticipated by artists, art lovers and enthusiasts, visitors nowadays come and pursue objectives beyond touring and sightseeing. Though very easy to navigate around the smallness of Jogja and the available assistance from friendly acquaintances, still a well structured and focused itinerary and interaction with certain artist or certain skilled artisan to optimize the experience is highly needed.

Residency program is no longer operated or facilitated only by institutions, anyone who is determined to pursue his/her ideal now can afford it. Networking is the main issues, fund is no longer the main factor. Artists need to travel, to visit places, to experience, to be aspired, to broaden their horizon for they are to create works which will challenge, enrich, and inspire others.

In January 2014, we initiated Jogja Independent Residency Project (JIRP). JIRP is operated in-sync with Jogja Contemporary (www.jogjacontemporary.net) to support the dynamic of contemporary art practices regionally and internationally. JIRP is to provide networking for artists in residence, to facilitate the needs of interaction with the locals artists, artisans and institutions in Jogjakarta. Our customized program is geared towards establishing a creative network, endeavors to assist and collaborate with artists, artisans and institutions in the course of their research, project, presentation or production. The program aims to build a meaningful and multi-layered cultural exchange where an individual can explore his/her practice in a different environment and set of resources. 'Independent' being the operative word, the Artist in Residence is to finance all activities and programs.
